As an esthetician, certified laser technician, and certified medical assistant with 16 years in the industry, I’ve spent my career helping patients better understand their skin. My name is Stephanie Garlick and I’m excited to be back on Racquel’s blog. One of the most common concerns I hear is, “My skin is so dry!” But sometimes what feels like dryness is actually dehydration.
Although these two concerns can look similar, they are not the same—and knowing the difference can make a big impact on your skincare routine and results.
Let’s Start with Dry Skin
Dry skin is a skin type. It naturally produces less oil, which can leave the skin barrier weaker and less able to hold onto moisture.
If you have dry skin, you may notice:
- Flakiness or rough patches
- Tightness throughout the day
- Increased sensitivity
- A dull complexion
- Fine lines that look more noticeable
Think of dry skin as skin that needs more oil, nourishment, and barrier support.
Now Let’s Talk About Dehydrated Skin
Dehydrated skin is a condition, not a skin type. It lacks water, not oil.
Even oily or acne-prone skin can be dehydrated.
Signs of dehydrated skin can include:
- Tightness after cleansing
- Dull or tired-looking skin
- Fine lines that seem to appear suddenly
- Skin that feels oily and tight at the same time
- Makeup that doesn’t sit smoothly
Dehydration can be caused by weather changes, travel, stress, lack of sleep, certain medications, over-exfoliation, or not using enough hydrating products.
Think of dehydrated skin as thirsty skin.
Why Does It Matter?
If you don’t know whether your skin is dry or dehydrated, it’s easy to choose products that don’t fully address the issue.
Heavier creams may help dry skin, but they won’t always fix dehydration if the skin is lacking water. On the other hand, lightweight hydrating products may not be enough for truly dry skin if the barrier also needs lipids and nourishment.
Many clients experience both, which is why a personalized routine matters.
My Favorite Place to Start: Hydration
Hydration is one of the foundations of healthy skin, no matter your skin type.
That’s why I often recommend the RFA Skincare Hydration Bundle for clients dealing with dryness, dehydration, dullness, or seasonal skin changes.
The Hydration Bundle helps:
- Restore moisture levels
- Support a healthy skin barrier
- Improve softness and smoothness
- Create a more radiant glow
- Minimize the appearance of dehydration lines
When skin is properly hydrated, it functions better, looks healthier, and absorbs products more effectively.
Professional Treatments That Can Help
Homecare is essential, but professional treatments can help restore balance faster.
For Dry Skin:
Customized facials that nourish and support the barrier are ideal. Our Custom and Corrective Facial and a customized Hydrafacial are great options for chronic dryness.
For Dehydrated Skin:
Treatments that infuse hydration and improve skin function work best. A customized Hydrafacial is one of my favorites because it gently exfoliates while delivering hydration. Dermaplaning with a hydrating mask and LED therapy can also leave skin refreshed, plump, and glowing.
The Takeaway
If your skin feels tight, dull, flaky, or uncomfortable, it may not just be dry.
Dry skin needs oil.
Dehydrated skin needs water.
Sometimes it needs both.
