How to Implement Multiple Actives Without Irritation

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that “stronger” and “more” always means “better.” The truth is, incredible results come from time, consistency, balance, and understanding how to properly introduce active ingredients into your routine.

I am all about results-driven skincare and believe active ingredients are truly the workhorses of an effective anti-aging routine. Ingredients like exfoliating acids and retinoids help improve texture, pigmentation, fine lines, breakouts, dullness, and overall skin health. But when too many potent products are layered incorrectly or introduced too quickly, irritation can happen fast. If you are completely new to medical grade skincare. I have an incredible post with tips for adjusting to medical grade skincare. Read about it here.

So what’s the good news? You absolutely CAN use multiple actives in your skincare routine successfully. However it does take strategy, patience, and a strong focus on hydration. I highly recommend working with a skincare expert when introducing actives into your current routine. We would love to answer any questions or help you curate a customized skincare routine at skin@rfaskincare.com

As we age, our skin’s natural cell turnover begins to slow down. Starting around our mid-20s, collagen production decreases by approximately 1% each year. Yes, you heard that right… 1%! Now combine that with environmental stressors like sun exposure, pollution, stress, and lifestyle habits, and the skin naturally begins to show signs of aging over time.

This is why ingredients like exfoliating acids and retinoids are so important for skin rejuvenation. They help encourage healthy cell turnover, smooth texture, brighten discoloration, soften fine lines and wrinkles, support collagen production, and keep the skin functioning at its best.

I always preach that prevention is way easier than correction. What I love about medical grade skincare is that it is one of the least invasive ways to support healthy aging long term. Starting younger and staying consistent can truly save your skin in the years to come.

The Key: Low and Slow

When implementing multiple active products into your routine, the biggest mistake I see people make is doing too much far too soon. We recommend waiting 1-2 weeks before adding any new products into your routine. This allows time for your skin to acclimate. And if there are two different strengths, start with the lower strength and work your way up if your skin can tolerate it.

It’s very common to experience over-exfoliation when introducing too many acids or retinoids too quickly or layering products incorrectly. Over-exfoliation can lead to dryness, redness, flaking, tightness. It can worsen your already existing skin conditions, increase sensitivity and compromise your skin barrier. Sometimes less truly is more.

This is why we always recommend starting low and slow. Listen to your skin and if your skin feels irritated, tight, inflamed, or overly dry, that’s your skin asking for a break.

How to Use Multiple Actives Properly

One of the most important things to understand is that not all active ingredients should be used together in the same routine. Products like Koji Clear Pads, Lux Pads, and Forever Young Retinol should not be layered on top of one another on the same night. Instead, alternate them throughout the week to allow your skin time to adjust and recover.

For example:

    •    One night may be an exfoliation night with our Pads

    •    Another night may focus on retinol

    •    Another night may focus purely on hydration and barrier repair

Hydration goes hand in hand with exfoliation, and I love reserving at least one night to be a hydration-focused night per week. This is vital when using active ingredients regularly. Over time, many people can gradually work up to using certain exfoliating products both morning and night, but this should happen slowly and intentionally based on how your skin responds.

The goal is not to strip or aggressively “peel” the skin. The goal is controlled, consistent skin cell turnover while maintaining a strong, healthy skin barrier. If you’re unsure whether your skin is tolerating your routine well, pull back, simplify, and focus on hydration for a few days or weeks before reintroducing actives back in again.

Active ingredients can completely transform the skin when used correctly. The key is building a routine that works with your skin, not against it. Consistency always wins over intensity.

It is a marathon not a sprint! Take your time, hydrate intentionally, alternate your actives, and listen to your skin throughout the process. Beautiful skin is built gradually and the healthiest routines are the ones you can maintain long term.
