Skincare Myths You Need To Stop Believing

Let’s be real—skincare can be overwhelming! One minute you’re told to exfoliate daily, the next you’re warned you are destroying your skin barrier. You see viral products all over TikTok Shop, contradicting advice online, and before you know it, your bathroom shelf is full… and your skin is STILL struggling. I get it and I’m here to help!

I’ve spent over 15 years in this industry helping thousands of patients transform their skin with medical-grade skincare routines. I’ve seen firsthand how much misinformation is out there and how it keeps people from feeling confident in their own skin. That’s exactly why I created RFA Skincare. I wanted to give people the real tools, the real education, and the real support they need to take care of their skin with confidence at the comfort of their own home.

I believe everyone deserves to feel amazing in their own skin. So let’s break down some of the most common skincare myths I hear all the time in practice and talk about what’s actually true.

Myth #1 You don’t need sunscreen on cloudy days.

This is false. Even on the cloudiest of days, harmful UV rays can still reach your skin, making applying SPF every single day, rain or shine, essential. Did you know, just one day out in the sun without sunscreen can reverse WEEKS of progress made correcting the skin? Not to mention it increases the risk of skin cancer. Read that again. Daily SPF is one of the best things you can do for your skin long-term.

My go-to is our Tinted  Protect SPF 50. It’s a mineral-based SPF with UVA & UVB protection. The universal tint gives your skin the prettiest natural glow. And it’s suitable for all skin types.

Myth #2 Oily and acne prone skin doesn’t need moisturizer.

False. This is absolutely not true. Please do not be afraid to hydrate your skin if you are breaking out. The skin actually NEEDS hydration to heal. In fact, when we are really dry, our skin produces more oil to try to hydrate it, and that oil can clog pores causing more breakouts. So skipping out on your moisturizer can actually make things worse.

Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic option. I recommend Hydrating Gel paired with Light Lotion on top. This duo will give your skin the hydration it needs to heal without clogging your pores.

Myth #3 Stop using the products if it’s causing you to breakout.

Not always the case. This one needs a little more of an explanation. Let me explain! If you just started a new medical grade exfoliating acid, and notice little bumps on your cheeks, forehead, and chin, do not worry! It could be your skin purging and not a breakout. What appears to look like a breakout is totally normal. Purging is when the actives in the product itself increases cell turnover and your skin pushes out all that congestion. While annoying, the good news?! Purging is temporary.  Have you ever heard the saying “it gets worse before it gets better”? This can be true here.  You have to be patient and push through this phase to reveal that beautiful new, clear complexion!

Allow your skin 6-8 weeks to adjust to your new exfoliating acid. If you do not see improvement in your skin and you are still experiencing breakouts, this might be a good time to reevaluate. If this is the case for you, please reach out to me for help. While it is not very common, there are times certain products are incompatible with your skin. I’m always here to help tweak your routine and get things back on track. Learn more about adjusting to medical grade skincare and how to manage this phase in your skincare journey in my blog post here.

Skincare is not a one-size-fits-all, but it definitely doesn’t have to feel confusing. If you’re struggling or just not sure where to start, take our Skin Quiz! It analyzes your photo, evaluates your skin, and recommends the best products for your unique needs.

You don’t have to figure this out on your own. I created this line to support you, and I’m here to guide you every step of the way. You deserve to feel confident and radiant in your skin!

Are there other skincare myths you’ve heard or things you’re unsure about?! I’d love to hear them. Leave a comment or message me. I’m always happy to break things down and help you feel more confident in your routine.
