Cheek bones! Who doesn’t want defined cheekbones and an overall balanced youthful face? When it comes to cheeks, they are a focal point of the face and today there are so many makeup tips out there to help make those cheeks pop! From contouring to blush and highlighter, so let’s talk about maximizing the youth of your face, but without making you look unnatural.
Ogee Curve
In a youthful face, you see a double curve that resembles the letter S at the midface region. The Ogee curve begins at the brows down to the cheeks and extenuates the volume of the cheeks. When looking at the whole face and the Ogee facial curve, it is seen as a convex forehead region moving to a slight concavity in the upper eye region. Transitioning to the cheek region it is ideal to see a convex contour with a final slight curvature in the jawline. Throughout the aging process, that S curve begins to collapse due to loss of volume in our facial fat pads.
By correcting the cheeks and restoring the Ogee curve, it can change how light reflects off the face. We refer to this as the light reflex at the apex of the cheek. That perfect touch of filler to the cheeks is like walking around with a beautiful highlighter on 24/7. A great injector knows how to soften shadows and fill areas of volume loss or deficit. The goal is to highlight features by bringing light to shadows. We want to use our products to contour and highlight, just like you do with your makeup. It is all about subtle, beautiful refinements to enhance your natural features.
Most people are worried that cheek filler means bigger “fatter” cheeks, but it is the complete opposite. Cheek filler in the back of the cheeks actually works to “tack” the cheeks up and lift the face and is very slimming. This is a great way to add contour to a rounder, fuller faces. It looks amazing on my 50-year-old patients all the way through to my 20-year-old patients. Cheek fillers are also a preventative measure as a treatment for sagging cheeks, adds volume to a depleted midface and helps soften the nasolabial folds.

Ogee Curve & Balancing Facial Features
At Racquel Aesthetics we like to make sure we are looking at the whole face with a global approach, for the most optimal youthful appearance. This method takes all of your facial features into account when making decisions on treatment plans or adjustments and allows your injector to maintain the integrity of the features that make you, YOU. The goal is to enhance symmetry and balance your facial features from top to bottom. The important thing to understand is that a great injector has the knowledge and experience to understand what you are wanting corrected and the correct way to treat that particular area. For example, you may think you have “hollow undereyes” and you may want filler there to correct it. After my assessment I may realize that yes, you can use a little filler under your eyes, but you also need to support the C curve of the cheek, as well as support the tail of the brow in the temples in order to achieve the most beautiful result.
Restoration and rejuvenation of the Ogee curve can be achieved through dermal fillers, when we restore the Ogee curve we also like to look at one’s temples. As we age, it is common to see hollowing in the temple region and one begins to have a “peanut” shape in their face. Treatment in this area will round the temples back out and take them from concave to convex – which is VERY youthful. This is such a subtle tweak that makes a big difference.
Especially, if the cheeks are restored, that hollow temple region can become more apparent. Once again that is why we want to take the global approach to the full face in restoration. The temple region is the perfect place to use Sculptra. Sculptra is leading the aesthetic industry in collagen production. Sculptra is an injectable made of PLLA. Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) is a medicine targeting fibroblasts in your skin, stimulating collagen production. I use the analogy of fertilizer to describe sculptra. As it is growing new collagen thus thickening and smoothing the outer layer of skin.
When we are sprinkling little amounts in all of the areas that need attention versus just overpowering one small feature, the face overall looks much more balanced and your work looks extremely natural and undetectable.
Where do I Begin?
At Racquel Aesthetics both myself and my injectors are fully versed on full facial balancing and we would love to help you. The first step is to email my amazing patient coordinator Lea Voda. Lea will get you information and ask for photos. Once I review your photos, Lea will give you my full recommendations for full facial balancing as well as any other rejuvenation treatments like lasers or skincare that I think will benefit you. This does not mean you have to commit to everything on your first visit, but I like you to have a fundamental understanding of what can be done to help you achieve your goals. It is nice to have a reference list to work towards. I do this complimentary for patients who want to come see me in the office. My injectors and I take local patients and we also have patients fly in from all over the country to see us. If you do not plan to see my team or I for treatment, I cannot give you treatment recommendations because I am unsure of your injectors skill level or product selection. If you would like a facial assessment please email Lea at Lea@RacquelAesthetics.com
