As an aesthetic nurse injector and skincare specialist for over 15 years, I have seen a lot of skincare trends through the years. Sometimes these trends make me laugh because literally there is no science or rationale behind them and sometimes I get worried and have to intervene with education! Now is the time, I want to intervene with education for my fellow parents out there!
Are you a mom with a young pre-teen or teen girl that has become obsessed with all the TikTok skincare trends? I have had a lot of moms contact me about these viral TikTok trends of their young girls wanting to purchase all these “flashy” and “trendy” skincare products. When I was a pre-teen I was using all things Lip Smackers, Bath & Body and Glitter! Gotta love the 90‘s!
I figured this would be a perfect blog topic to really dive into all the ins and outs of what young teens should be using for their skin and what parents should be cautious of.
Let’s be honest, we have all fallen victim to promising and glamorous skincare bottles that line the shelves of Sephora and other beauty counters. Not only have we spent hundreds of dollars on products that don’t deliver impressive results, they aren’t quality ingredients.
Besides these products not delivering promising results, the reality is young children and teens skin do not need the ingredients that are in these trendy products. Not only should they not be using these ingredients, kids don’t know how to use things in moderation. One thing I do love about these skincare trends is that it is instilling healthy habits of skincare at a young age. Taking care of our skin is so essential, building a foundation of great habits is wonderful!
Many of the ingredients in these products are very harsh and not suitable for kids young skin, not to mention the price tag associated with some of these products. A couple of the most popular products on Tik Tok right now contain ingredients like Glycolic acid, Retinol, Vitamin C to name a few. Eight and ten your old children should not be using any of these ingredients! The reality of these trends can end up causing more harm to your child’s skin. As a mom & skincare provider, I want to urge you to read the ingredients on some of these products you pre-teens and teens are being influenced to use. When you say no, you may not be the “coolest” mom, but rest assured you know you are ultimately doing the safest and best thing for your child.
So What Should My Pre-Teen & Teen Be Using?
For our young pre-teens and teens, Less is more, keep it simple! Chances are their skin truly needs the benefits of foundational products and a routine. At RFA, for our beginners without any skincare concerns or conditions we are treating, I recommend 3 products. A cleanser, moisturizer and daily SPF.
PRIME + PROTECT OR DAILY + PROTECT (these both come in tinted options if your pre-teen or teen is wanting to start wearing a little “makeup” )
If your teen is struggling with Acne, I would recommend these 3 products plus adding in MANDELIC 5% PADS.
Other habits to instill in your teen when it comes to maintaining healthy skin
- Avoid touching the face
- Avoid picking blemishes
- Changing sheets & pillowcases frequently
- Washing makeup off before bed & cleansing twice daily
- Daily SPF and sun protection
As teens start to experience hormonal changes and you start noticing acne or other skin changes, that is a perfect opportunity to consult with one of the RFA skincare providers to build a customized skincare regimen that is safe and effective for your child’s skin and goals!
At RFA we take pride in making sure we provide safe, effective and customized skincare plans for all skin types, ages and genders. If you are a mom that wants to help nourish your pre-teen or teen’s skin, we would love to help! Start your complimentary consult today!
