Even if you don’t make an online appointment with me this blog post will still help you in making some amazing decisions for not only your skin but also your confidence! Once you’ve created your unique skin care plan, one that works for YOU you can be sure that when you’re applying your serum, cleanser or moisturizer that’s it’s working FOR you.
Where to start with a Skin Care routine
Using good skin care is key to maintaining your most healthy skin. A lot of people don’t know where to start. Let me break it down. Here is the 101.
AM Routine
Our AM routine is geared to PROTECT our skin. We want to cleanse our skin & use an SPF every single morning. This is also a great time to use a serum like hyaluronic acid or a Vitamin C/E. Antioxidants fight off free radicals that damage the skin and can even cause skin cancer. Free radicals are caused by environmental damage such as pollution, smoking, and sun exposure but also occur naturally in the body. Antioxidants also give us our own built in sunscreen in the skin and protect us from UVA/UVB rays. Next, SPF should be used daily and not just for sunny pool days, those built in antioxidants I mentioned are not enough!! You would be surprised how much sun damage is acquired over a lifespan just from driving in the car!
PM Routine
Our PM routine is geared to CORRECT the skin. At night we want to use an acid like retinol or retin-a. Acids increase our skin cell turnover by sloughing off dead skin cells which then tells our body to create new cells. This leaves the skin looking more youthful and fresh. Acids also kill off acne causing bacteria, eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, shrinks pores, and brighten and tighten the skin. Lastly, we want to use a moisturizer to lock moisture into the skin. It is important to keep our skin hydrated as well as counteract the drying effects of using acids.
You do not need to use 100 products. Using a few of the right products is all you need. Here is an example of a great daily regimen:
AM
1. Cleanse
2. Antioxidant
3. Moisturizer with SPF
PM
1. Cleanse
2. Acid (Retinoic, Kojic, or Lytic) every other or every 3rd night
3. Moisturizer nightly
4. *Use Lux Pads once per week (my FAV medical grade TCA wipe).
Above is the foundation or building blocks for an amazing skincare plan. When I’m working with you the specific products will be adjusted to fit the needs of each individual client based on skin type, skin problems, and skin goals!
A person with very oily skin will use different products than someone who is more dry or someone with very sensitive skin. A person looking to treat chronic acne will require different products than someone more concerned with pigment and melasma or rosacea. Some clients’ plans may include eye cream, neck creams, or lip treatment creams. It is all about tailoring the plan to fit each individuals needs.
Medical Grade vs. Drugstore Quality
Medical grade products contain the most potent active ingredients. These products yield much more effective results at a MUCH faster pace compared to drug store products. Drug store products contain a lot of “fillers.” In short, you get what you pay for. Using medical grade skin care regularly is key to amazing skin! Small daily efforts equal huge results when it comes to taking care of your skin. I encourage all of my patients to do their part at home and use the best products on their skin. This is the best way to maintain results from other procedures, prevent aging, and having glowing beautiful skin on the daily!
Good skincare is key for prevention, treatment, and maintenance! I urge all of my patients to make sure they do their part at home and use professional skincare to maintain the results we work so hard to achieve. Every woman over 25 should be using daily SPF, an acid, and a good moisturizer at bare minimum!
Creating Your Unique Plan
Even when recommended by a practitioner skin care sometimes takes trial and error. Also don’t be discouraged if you break out after switching to a better, even more expensive product, this is part of the detoxing period! Unless you are experiencing a rash or pain continue to use through a 28 day period or as per the direction I would absolutely love the chance to help you with your skin.
Get to know your skin by experiment with different amounts of product, and using products tailored to your skin type which may be dry, oily or combination. It’s all trial and error!
It is never too early or too late to begin taking care of your skin!
If it all still feels too confusing, I’m here to help! Achieving skincare goals is a process and I will create a plan based on the information you provide me with. I have all of my online clients email me with information about their skin type, their goals, and a photo always helps 🙂 It’s that easy! I will then create the perfect plan for you using top notch products!
