Are dark spots or uneven pigmentation leaving you feeling frustrated and self-conscious? At RFA Skincare, we know exactly what you’re going through, and we’re honored you found us!
Our story actually begins with a deep personal journey from our founder and CEO, Racquel Frisella- a journey that has shaped the foundation of what we do at RFA Skincare and why we do it.
Here’s Racquel’s Story
In 2016, after the birth of my son, Enzo, I was navigating through the whirlwind of new motherhood and embracing the postpartum hormonal skin changes and developed severe melasma.
Melasma is a very common skin condition that causes brown or gray-brown patches on the skin, often triggered by sun exposure or hormonal changes. It occurs when melanocyte cells overproduce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color.
While melasma is a physical skin condition, its impact on my self-esteem was profound. As an aesthetic provider, I felt like a failure because I couldn’t find a solution for my own complexion. My face was covered with dark patches that made it look like I had dirt on my skin. I became self-conscious and avoided leaving the house without makeup or a hat to hide my face. It was incredibly frustrating because I couldn’t find any products that worked, and there were so few resources for people dealing with melasma. I felt completely lost and isolated in my struggle.
Instead of accepting that this was just something I had to live with, I decided to take matters into my own hands and I became determined to create a solution—not just for myself, but for the thousands of women who were going through the same thing. I set out on a mission to bring to you a product that could not only transform your skin, but also your life, that’s when the evolution of our best selling Koji Clear Pads was born.
I was committed to bringing something to the market that could make a real difference, not only in terms of effectiveness but also in how people felt about their skin. We have transformed thousands of women’s lives with our Koji Clear Pads.
Over the last year, with the relaunch of RFA Skincare, I had the privilege of collaborating with the most esteemed skincare scientists and chemists in the industry to refine and elevate this pad to make it even more effective and transformative. Our dedication has led us to a new invention in skincare with our proprietary, patented Triple Resorcinol blend, making this pad ever better than before. In addition to Kojic Acid, Arbutin, and Salicylic Acid, these pads also contain hydrating humectants and antioxidants. The synergy of these ingredients is designed to lighten deep-set pigment while offering additional benefits like pore tightening and acne reduction.
Understanding Melasma
Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by the appearance of dark, flat patches that are darker than your natural skin tone. These patches are typically brown or greyish-brown in color and most commonly appear on the face, although they can also develop on other parts of the body that are regularly exposed to sunlight. The most common areas where melasma manifests are the forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, jawline, and upper lip.
Who Is At Risk?
- Women (Ages 20-50): Almost 90% of melasma cases occur in women, particularly those in their reproductive years. Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or birth control, can trigger melasma.
- Darker Skin Tones: People with darker skin are more vulnerable to melasma, as their skin produces more melanin, which can lead to pigmentation issues when triggered.
- Family History: If someone in your family has melasma, you are 50% more likely to develop it yourself due to genetic factors.
- Pregnant Women: Hormonal changes during pregnancy significantly increase the risk of melasma, often referred to as the “mask of pregnancy.”
- Regular Sun Exposure: UV rays from the sun can trigger or worsen melasma, making those with frequent sun exposure more susceptible to developing dark spots.
Melasma Triggers
- Exposure to sunlight and heat
- Pregnancy
- Artificial tanning
- Medications
- Thyroid disorders
- LED screens
- Stress
- HRT during menopause
How To Treat Melasma with RFA Skincare
First and foremost, at RFA Skincare, we are here with you every step of the way and are honored to help you transform your skin and confidence. A tyrosinase inhibitor, also known as a “pigment blocker,” should be a staple in your daily skincare routine, year-round. Tyrosinase is an enzyme that triggers the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. In simple terms, pigment blockers work by inhibiting the production of melanin, helping to prevent the formation of new dark spots or discoloration.
