Where Are We With Food Trends?
I recently Googled the “Top Nutrition Trends for 2024” – A few surprising things came up and some not so surprising. Hydration and whole foods made the list and I am happy to see that, as we should all be drinking more water and eating more plants and animals.
Sustainability was listed – we should all know where our food is coming from, whether that is a factory or a farm.
My favorite thing I found was the “You are what you eat”… my mom used to say this and I heard it often growing up, but it has been a while since I heard it.
Honestly; This is not so far from the truth… you are what your food ate/is. Your body breaks down what you eat and turns that into smaller molecules to be used for energy, rebuilding, repair, etc. When we consume anything, our body works hard to digest and break that substance down into smaller, usable pieces. We are constantly in a breakdown/repair process and we need fuel and building blocks.
FUELING OUR BODIES
When we are fueling with adequate protein, carbs, fats, vitamins, and minerals we are able to function more efficiently. We are giving our body what it needs to do work and to create a healthier you.
When you intake plants – you not only get vitamins and minerals, but fiber to help the gut and phytochemicals to help combat inflammation.
When we eat adequate protein from quality sources such as farm fresh eggs, grass fed beef we are taking in adequate amino acids to build cells (think; hair, skin, nails, bones, immune cells, etc) as well as minerals needed to produce hormones.
This goes for the opposite – when you eat high amounts of sugar or fried foods those molecules have to go somewhere. Our bodies process them and use what they can then the rest gets stored or excreted. I do not want to tell you to never have sweets and treats, but they are sometimes foods. We should be mostly having high quality, nutrient dense foods.
Moral Of The Story
It is so easy to be distracted by and call foods “bad” or unhealthy and there is so much advice out there. My best advice is to do what works for you and your family. Do the best you can with what you have. Choose whole real foods, plants in their natural form and high quality protein.
Fuel your body for how you want to be! Cheers to a happy, healthy and balanced lifestyle!
Darcy

What about food dyes found in lots of protein supplements
Hi Renee- I always try to live by the 80/20 rule! I strive to achieve my protein from animal & plant sources and then supplement with protein supplements as needed to reach my goals!
